Jonny Edgar and AO Racing Take Top-5 at Indy

BRDC Superstars driver Jonny Edgar and AO Racing’s LMP2 crew, along with their fan-favourite Oreca machine “Spike The Dragon” came away from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a strong 5th place finish in class after six hours of hard-fought racing.

The penultimate round of the IMSA Endurance Cup got underway on Friday with opening practice, followed by final practice and qualifying on Saturday. In warm and settled conditions, the team completed plenty of productive laps as they dialled in the car’s pace, leaving Bronze-rated driver PJ Hyett confident ahead of qualifying. Taking on the all-important session, Hyett delivered a superb effort to put the car third on the LMP2 grid, setting up AO Racing to challenge for a second straight podium.

When the race began under overcast skies, Hyett handled the opening 90 minutes with composure, keeping Spike firmly inside the top three before handing the car to Edgar. The Cumbrian immediately delivered an impressive stint, steering clear of the chaos in traffic and even briefly leading the class during the middle stages. His clean and consistent pace ensured the team remained firmly in podium contention heading into the final phase.

However, hopes of silverware were dashed late on when the team was handed a drive-through penalty following contact with another car. Despite the setback, experienced teammate Dane Cameron pushed hard in the closing stint to bring the car home in fifth – still a valuable result in the ultra-competitive LMP2 field.

Reflecting on the race Edgar said: “It’s been a good showing from the whole team. At one point we looked like getting another podium finish but in the end a couple of things didn’t go our way and 5th was the best we could do. There are plenty of positives to take from Indy, it’s still a good result and I’m looking ahead to the season finale at Road Atlanta. As always, I’m grateful for the hard work from the team and also to all the fans who were supporting us and Rexy, the sister car in GTD PRO.”

Before returning to IMSA for the Petit Le Mans season finale on 11th October, Edgar’s attention now shifts to Japan for the penultimate round of the FIA World Endurance Championship at Fuji. The six-hour race will be broadcast live on FIAWEC.TVand TNT Sports in the United Kingdom.
