IMSA Victory at Watkins Glen
Jonny Edgar Delivers Again with IMSA Victory at Watkins Glen
Jonny continued his remarkable run of form with victory at Watkins Glen, securing his second IMSA career win in the 6 Hours of The Glen – just two weeks on from his triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Representing AO Racing, the Cumbrian driver wasted no time making his mark. Driving the fan-favourite “Spike the Dragon” Oreca LMP2, Jonny topped the timesheets in Friday’s sole practice session and repeated the feat on Saturday morning, immediately establishing the team as serious contenders. Confidence was already high, with AO Racing having claimed their first podium of the 2025 campaign at the same circuit 12 months prior.
Under IMSA regulations, PJ Hyett, the team’s bronze driver, took on qualifying duties and delivered a strong performance, narrowly missing out on pole position. A front-row start in P2, however, ensured the team remained firmly in the hunt heading into race day.
Hyett’s composed opening stint kept the #99 car inside the top three while skilfully avoiding the early incidents that disrupted much of the field. As the race settled into its rhythm, Jonny took over driving duties for the middle phase and quickly asserted himself at the front. Demonstrating both pace and racecraft, Jonny moved into the lead and, crucially, held position at the three-hour mark – securing valuable Endurance Cup points for the team’s championship challenge. In a race defined by chaos and attrition, the 22-year-old delivered a measured and mature stint, keeping the car clear of trouble before handing over to Dane Cameron for the final push. Cameron delivered a decisive closing performance, executing a series of clinical overtakes in the final hours to secure AO Racing’s first LMP2 class victory of the 2026 season.
Jonny: “That really was a wild race and a difficult one from both the racing and the strategy side,” said Jonny. “With everything going on, all the crashes and safety cars, it wasn’t clear cut as to what would be the winning strategy but the guys and girls at AO did an incredible job as always. We had a great car, we were able to keep going forward and Dane pulled off some great overtakes in the final few stints and really those are what won us the race.”
The result sees AO Racing maintain their lead in the championship standings, with momentum firmly on their side as they head to the next round at Road America on 2 August – a new addition to this year’s calendar.
Before then, Jonny will turn his attention back to the FIA World Endurance Championship, travelling to Brazil for the Six Hours of São Paulo on 12 July. Competing with TF Sport in the LMGT3 category, Jonny currently leads the standings and will be aiming to extend that advantage. The race will be streamed live on FIAWEC+ and broadcast in the UK on TNT Sports.
