Jonny Edgar scores vital points in challenging 6 Hours of Barcelona

Cumbria’s finest held onto the lead of the LMGT3 standings as the FIA World Endurance Championship season reached its climax, despite a challenging and bruising 6 Hours of Barcelona last weekend.

The BRDC SuperStars driver and his teammates, Nicky Catsburg and Ben Keating, came into the penultimate round of the season as championship leaders following a strong showing in Fuji, where the team secured a top-five finish. Not only were they able to keep Jonny at the top of the drivers’ standings, but they also strengthened TF Sport’s position at the head of the teams’ championship.

The 6 Hours of Barcelona, a new addition to the FIA WEC calendar in 2026 due to unrest in the Middle East, began in sunny and dry conditions on Friday. The team looked to maximise their track time, with the weather forecast suggesting rain could hit the circuit on both Saturday and Sunday. After working through their programmes, the team headed into Saturday feeling positive.

A unique format, brought about by a clash with the GT World Challenge Europe series, meant that final practice, qualifying and Hyperpole all took place on Saturday morning. The team hit the ground running, and for the first time this season, Ben Keating was able to put the #33 Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R into Hyperpole, giving Jonny a chance to fight for pole position and a place at the front of the grid. The 22-year-old delivered a superb performance and set the team up for a strong race with a fourth-place starting position.

The race on Sunday would, however, prove to be the trickiest of the season so far for the team. Ben Keating took the start in wet conditions and made a strong getaway, moving into the podium positions and keeping the team firmly in contention until handing over to Jonny. By then, the track had dried, but conditions remained challenging. Unfortunately, the championship leader made a rare mistake and picked up a time penalty, which dropped the team towards the tail end of the top 10.

Jonny showed his fighting spirit and why he is a champion in waiting. Despite being nudged off the track during a robust battle, he fought his way back to fourth place with some excellent racecraft before handing the car over to Nicky Catsburg for the final stint.

Despite the team’s best efforts and determination, they ultimately crossed the line in seventh place. However, the vital six-point haul means they continue to lead both championships with just one race remaining. Jonny and TF Sport hold an 18-point advantage in the drivers’ and teams’ standings over their closest rivals at Manthey Porsche and will look to secure the titles at the season finale in Monza on 6-8 November.

Jonny: “It was a bit of a difficult race for our car. We made some strategy calls that didn’t quite work out, and it was difficult to overtake today. We also had a bit of damage on the car, along with a penalty after I made that mistake early in my stint. A late-race Safety Car helped us make up a few places, but overall it was a tricky race. Ben and Nicky did a great job, and we head to Monza still at the top of the standings and in a strong position.”

The final race of the season will be broadcast live on FIAWEC+ and will also be shown on TNT Sports in the United Kingdom.
