FIA Formula 3: Silverstone, Rd.7 2023

Cumbria’s Jonny Edgar headed to the British Grand Prix, his home round of the championship, looking to build on his strong performance last time out in Austria but ended up enduring a frustrating weekend.

During the practice sessions, Jonny got his weekend off to a drama free start and racked up a solid number of laps on a dry Silverstone circuit, giving him and his MP Motorsport team a good foundation heading into qualifying.

The D.Tolson and Sons sponsored driver put in a number of fast times during the 30 minute qualifying session and secured a front row starting place for the sprint race.

Saturday’s Sprint Race was delayed due to the change in weather. Whilst some drivers opted to switch to wets as light rain began to fall, Jonny and his team elected to stick with the slicks and set off from second place. Unfortunately, Jonny began to fall back and dropped out of the points before the safety car was deployed. Under the safety car conditions Jonny and his team decided to make the switch to wets as the rain fall intensified but then the track began to dry and along with other drivers on wets, struggled to move forward. Jonny made one stop before finishing the race in 29th.

The BRDC Superstars driver began the Feature Race on Sunday from 11th and immediately got his elbows out in his pursuit of a points finish but was involved in an unfortunate incident at the end of lap 2 at turn 16 which resulted in a puncture, suspension and front wing damage. Jonny’s race was unfortunately over in the pits.

Jonny: “Practice was quite difficult as the car balance was different than what we expected but we managed to make a good change for qualifying and I was quite happy to qualify p11 after how practice had gone. Both the races didn’t go to plan which was a shame but weekends like this happen sometimes.”

Round eight of the 2023 FIA Formula 3 championship takes place at the Hungaroring this weekend and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1.
