6 Hours of Imola

Jonny Edgar comes away from Imola with top 10 finish and retains LMGT3 championship lead

Jonny and his TF Sport Corvette team finished the 6 hours of Imola in seventh place in class and maintain their position at the top of the LM GT3 standings.

Less than one week on from his sensational debut win at the Long Beach Grand Prix, Jonny made the trip to the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy for the second FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) race and his second race weekend in the Corvette Z06 GT3.R.

Free practice on Friday began in slightly damp and wet conditions but before long the cars were running on slick tyres and Jonny and his team began to fine tune their car over the two practice sessions.

On Saturday Jonny would only drive the car once in final practice as the regulations required his bronze category teammate, Ben Keating to participate in the first segment of qualifying and sadly, Ben didn’t advance to LM GT3 Hyperpole. This meant Jonny and his team would start the race from 16th in class.

The D. Tolson and Sons supported athlete and his team entered the race with a calm mindset, knowing that over the course of the next six hours the key would be to stay out of trouble and attempt to advance through the field. Ben took the start of the race and was in the process of moving up the order before being pitched into a spin by the Iron Dames Porsche in the early stages of the race.

Ben completed the rest of his stint and handed the car over to the BRDC Superstars driver. Jonny then had a trouble free stint, picking off his rivals one by one, before Dani Juncadella took over for the final segment of the race. Despite the team struggling with pace all weekend, the #33 team finished in seventh place, bagging six valuable points and maintaining their lead at the top of the standings.

Jonny: “It wasn’t our strongest weekend, we didn’t have the pace all weekend but the team did a great job and executed everything well and it was important to bring home a points finish. In this championship, every point you can get is valuable as it’s so competitive. Now the focus turns to Spa which will be an important round as it’ll be the last race before the 24 hours of Le Mans.”

The six hours of Spa will take place on 10th May and will be broadcast live in the UK on TNT Sports and will also be available on FIAWEC.TV
