Killer at Kartmasters

Date 3rd August 2015

After four days of intense activity at PF, it all boiled down to just one race lasting for 17 minutes. Jonny had shown good pace in his four Heats spread over Saturday and Sunday, although he incurred a ten second penalty in one of them for crossing over the tramlines as this race started. It meant that he’d be starting Sunday’s Pre Final off grid 4.

Unfazed by this minor setback, he went into an early lead, followed initially by Harry Thompson. After Brandon Martland took over 2nd spot, however, Jonny decided to let him have a turn at the front. He then began to push Brandon so that they established a healthy lead over Thompson in 3rd place. Martland held 1st position until the final lap when Jonny nipped past to win by a margin of around 20 yards. Lorcan Hanafin and Dexter Patterson demoted Thompson to 5th.

Jonny swept into an immediate lead once the main final got underway, with Thompson storming through into 2nd place. Martland then went into 1st spot with Jonny tucked in immediately behind him for a few laps before resuming the lead once more. Thompson moved up into 2nd place and then, with just over 2 laps remaining, took Jonny off at the hairpin.

This incident cost Jonny eight places and, more crucially, put him more than 60 yards behind the leaders. Thompson’s stint at the front was cut short by a hard charging Taylor Barnard who demoted him to 4th position behind Finlay Bunce and Joseph Taylor. Jonny climbed up to 6th but still finished some 20 yards behind the leaders.

“It was a killer blow,” admitted Justin afterwards, “but we’re not really complaining. One off championship events such as Kartmasters and the “O” Plate usually boil down to these do or die efforts. With just over two laps remaining it’s often better to be lying 3rd or 4th than actually leading, so he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I was very happy with his pace and that’s given us confidence for the final round of Super 1 due to take place here in September.”
