Super in Scotland

British Championships for Cadets - Rd.5, Larkhall 12/7/15

It looked, at one stage, as though Jonny’s championship challenge had come off the rails. In typical fashion, though, he managed to conquer adversity and produced a stunning performance that drew admiring glances even from his closest rivals.

After topping Saturday’s Timed Qualifying session, he took 2nd place behind Dexter Patterson in Heat 1. Next time out he attempted a bold manoeuvre on the last lap to take 1st place momentarily. However before this move was 100% completed he took a knock from behind that sent him spinning off the circuit. This dropped Jonny down to 9th spot and cost him valuable championship points.

Setting off from grid 5 in Final 1, he lost little time in seizing 2nd place but then took another clout that dropped him down to 5th spot. He rapidly made up places once again and had moved back into 2nd position before quarter distance. By that time, though, Patterson was 70 yards further up the road and there didn’t seem to be much Jonny could do about it.

Final 2 began disastrously for him when his motor cut out on the starting line. It meant that he started this race off grid 34. He quickly made up places and had climbed up to 10th spot by half distance. Within four more laps he’d closed up the 50 yards gap to Owen Marlow in 9th position and promptly overtook him. Next up on Jonny’s list of targets was Lorcan Hanafin some 40 yards ahead. It took another 3 laps to catch and overtake him. With a couple of laps remaining he made it into 4th place but was too far behind Taylor Barnard to gain any further positions.

There was a shock later on when irregularities were discovered in Dexter Patterson’s fuel. It resulted in the Scottish driver being excluded from the entire meeting, leaving Jonny holding a championship lead of 43 points over Harry Thompson.

“I had my head in my hands when Jonny’s kart refused to start, but it actually brought out the best from him,” said Justin. “I don’t think I’ve seen him drive a better race and he did it under circumstances that would probably have dispirited many others. 4th place, promoted to 3rd, was certainly no less than he deserved and we were all very proud of him at the end”.
