Steady in Scotland

19th May 2015

LGM Rd.3 at Larkhall (17th May 2015)

The weather at Larkhall underwent rapid changes, but Jonny’s pace in both dry and wet conditions was predictably quick. After winning his opening Heat using slick tyres, he finished 2nd behind Taylor Barnard in the next one that was held on a damper surface. After starting from 13th position in Heat 3, Jonny gradually worked his way through the field until he had climbed up to 2nd place. By this time Luca Van Knapton had opened out a massive lead, but he rapidly closed the gap until just a couple of yards separated these two at the finish.

Harry Thompson, Joseph Taylor and Georgi Dimitrov also emerged as Heat winners, but Jonny had done enough to secure pole position for the “A” Final and with it three important bonus points. One or two drops of rain could be felt as karts began to line up for this race, but with the circuit still looking dry, most competitors had chosen slicks. With grey clouds drifting over, though, a couple of drivers had taken the chance to come out on wets. The start was delayed and by this time circuit conditions had dramatically altered. Ultimately, it was decided that everyone should be allowed to change tyres.

As expected, Jonny went into an immediate lead that he held for 15 laps. For most of this time, however, he had Harry Thompson, Owen Marlow and Georgi Dimitrov following close in his tracks. At one stage it appeared as though he may have broken the tow as a ten yard gap appeared. Thompson and Marlow then worked together until they’d caught up once again. Dimitrov had begun to drop off the pace by this stage, so it was now a three kart battle.

With just a few laps remaining Thompson took over 1st place and Marlow followed him through. Jonny took 2nd spot and started the final lap challenging strongly for 1st position. Marlow had dropped away and fell into the clutches of Dexter Patterson who had been circulating a good distance further back in 5th spot for most of the race. Thompson was forced into a defensive line and slowed the pace to such an extent that it suddenly brought Patterson into contention. As Jonny positioned his kart in preparation for an overtaking manoeuvre, Dexter swept through into 2nd place. Thompson claimed his third successive LGM victor with Jonny having to settle for 3rd spot.

“Winning the first three rounds is obviously a great achievement for Harry but there are six more to go and Jonny still looks strong in 2nd spot,” said Justin. “We’re hoping for a good result at Whilton Mill in Round 4”.
