Damage in Disneyland

2nd March 2015

Florida Winter Tour (February 21/22)

Jonny’s championship chances suffered a bit of damage in Orlando when he competed in rounds 3 and 4 of the Florida Winter Tour. After a near perfect weekend in Miami he was defending a championship lead of 13 points over his closest rival Nick d’Orlando from New York.

Things looked promising early in the week when a rare outbreak of rain made track conditions very slippery. He immediately mastered the wet conditions setting lap-times that no-one else came close to matching. It didn’t take long for the circuit to dry out but even then Jonny appeared to have a significant advantage.

Racing began in earnest on Saturday and Jonny drew first blood by heading the Timed Qualifying session. He followed this up by winning both Heats, thus widening his championship lead. During Saturday’s Final, however, his motor appeared to lose some power and he slipped down to sixth position at one stage before recovering to 3rd.

On Sunday morning the power loss was even more apparent and he switched to his second choice motor. He qualified 6th with this engine but remained confident of better results in the actual races. He finished 5th in his first Heat but then had a disaster next time out by dropping down to 14th spot following an excursion off the circuit.

That placed him on grid 16 for the Final. He quickly climbed up to 9th spot but then got involved in a couple of skirmishes that cost him valuable time. Eventually, he crossed the line in 7th place. It was hardly a disaster, but this result has dropped him to 2nd place in the championship table.
