ABkC “O” Plate for IAME Cadet at Larkhall (22/6/2014)
Jonny didn’t allow a broken wrist to interfere with his record breaking performance at Larkhall. In scorching sunshine he completed an action packed final lap to win his second consecutive “O” Plate title. He is thought to be the first cadet to win these titles in consecutive seasons. He is most certainly the youngest driver to claim this achievement.

It looked, at one stage, as though he wouldn’t be able to race in this event at all. His wrist had been broken during a club event at Rissington three weeks earlier. Following laser treatment a specialist gave him the go ahead on Wednesday. Jonny was all ready to set off for Larkhall on Thursday afternoon when a letter from the MSA arrived informing him that he couldn’t compete because of his earlier injury.
“It was a total shock,” declared his dad, Justin. “We’d followed medical advice conscientiously and stopped Jonny from competing in two Little Green Man rounds, effectively scuppering any chance of success in this series. Fortunately we had sufficient time to contact the MSA and argue our case.”
Eventually the MSA agreed that he could race, but not before a written consent from the specialist had been faxed to them. “It was all very hectic,” said Justin. “If the MSA letter had arrived 5 or 10 minutes later, we wouldn’t have known anything about it until the officials prevented us from racing. By then, of course, it would have been too late for us to do anything about it.”
Jonny didn’t allow all that to worry him unduly and he looked very quick in the practice sessions on Friday and Saturday. One or two incidents in his three Heats left him occupying grid 9 for the Final. Fortunately, this was a long race and he was able to make up places. Even so, at one stage he was 80 yards or more behind the leaders. He began the last lap in 4th position, but by then he’d caught up with the top 3. On the very last bend he swept through to claim a thrilling victory.
