Successful start to Super One at Shenington

31st March 2014

BRITISH CADET CHAMPIONSHIPS (29/30th MARCH, 2014) - Jonny’s British Championship challenge got off to a great start at Shenington. After winning both of Saturday’s heats he claimed pole position for Final 1 and looked to be in good shape. This turned out to be a hard fought battle, as most cadet races are these days.

With the lead having regularly changed hands, they began a hectic final lap. Lewis Thompson initially led this one, but Jonny and Kiern Jewiss were both challenging strongly. Joe Turney Alex McDade and Albert Carter appeared to be too far adrift to affect the outcome. However, when they came back into sight Lewis had dropped to 4th spot and Jonny was lying 6th. On the last corner, he was able to overtake Carter for 5th position.

Things got complicated when Lewis protested, claiming that Jonny had deliberately driven him off the circuit. After listening to the marshal’s version of events and studying onboard camera footage, however, it was deemed that Thompson’s Next Gen team-mate, Kiern Jewiss had caused this collision and he was subsequently docked 5 places, dropping from 1st to 6th.

Jewiss launched an appeal and asked Jonny to appear as a witness. “I told them that Kiern wasn’t to blame,” said Jonny. “Three of us were fighting for the lead and it was just a racing accident. They listened to me and Kiern was reinstated in 1st place. I was disappointed to finish back in 5th place but it was just one of those things.”

Final 2 was another very close affair with a number of different leaders emerging, including Jonny. However, he got involved in a minor incident with Jewiss and both of them lost ground. Gradually they caught up with the leading trio until, after 18 laps, five drivers were in contention. Jonny got up to 2nd behind Tom Wood and took a wide swing around the last corner in an attempt to come out quicker. Wood held on but only by a hair’s breadth as they crossed the line separated by just 0.05 seconds. These results were good enough to ensure that Jonny now leads the championships by two points from Joe Turney. Jewiss is 5 points behind in 3rd spot.
