Super Show at Shenington

19th March 2014

CLUB MEETING 16/3/2014 - With the Super 1 opener on this circuit just a fortnight away, all of Britain’s top cadet drivers turned out at Shenington and provided very high quality racing. Jonny was in sparkling form during Saturday’s testing and emerged as one of the favourites for Sunday’s race.

From pole position, he won the opening Heat by a hair’s breadth from Albert Carter, but Teddy Wilson and Tom Wood both looked extremely quick as, between them, they gained 34 places to finish 3rd and 4th respectively. The timing sheets showed that these two had set the joint fastest lap of this race.

Jonny started Heat 2 from last place on the grid and clearly had a lot to do. After just a couple of laps, though, he’d gained 14 places to get into the top 15. Next time around he passed another seven drivers and lay in 8th position. After that he picked up one place with every lap to eventually finish 3rd. Only Wilson could equal his points score but he finished Heat 3 down in 3rd spot, leaving Jonny on pole position for the Final.

Jonny took an immediate lead in this race ahead of Wood who was soon replaced by Alex McDade. Jonny and Alex worked together so that they eventually established a gap of more than 100 yards over the chasing pack led by Wood and Wilson. It wasn’t until the final lap that Alex made an attempt to pass and he actually got his wheels ahead as they came into Sector 1. However, Jonny swiftly regained 1st place and held on to record a well deserved win. Wood lost out on the final lap as Teddy Wilson, Zac Robertson, Lewis Thompson and Ethan Hawkey all went through.

“I’m not sure how hard that one was for Jonny but it was certainly nerve wracking for me,” conceded Justin afterwards. “He and Alex got the tactics exactly right but I knew that the last lap would be difficult. Right at the end I wasn’t quite sure whether he’d won it or not, the racing was that close between them. If he needed a confidence boost prior to the British Championships beginning later this month then that race will have provided it for him.”
