Shame about Shenny!

After points from the final round were collated, Jonny has finished 6th in the British Championship table for Cadets. Considering that he could still have another four full seasons racing at cadet level, it’s an excellent result. But for some woeful luck at Shenington, however, he could have finished a couple of places higher in the final standings.

It all began very promisingly on Saturday when he emerged from his Timed Qualifying group as the quickest driver. A couple of competitors in the next session were slightly quicker, but that still left him lying 3rd overall with good prospects for the Heats.

Things didn’t work out particularly well after that. He dropped down to 7th spot in Heat 1 and repeated this result next time out after getting involved in a couple of collisions. That left him starting Final 1 from 9th place on the grid.

Sunday’s two finals were held in extremely wet conditions and kart set-up played a major part. Jonny made a very good start in Final 1 and actually took over 4th spot before the first lap had been completed. However he was forced wide on a couple of corners and at one time found himself in 19th place before climbing back up to 11th.

“It wasn’t quite the result we were looking for,” Justin admitted. “However, we knew that Jonny was quick enough to get amongst the leaders in Final 2 provided that everything went his way.”

Once again Jonny made a good start and soon moved up into 6th position. Whilst challenging for 5th place, though, he was pushed very wide allowing four other karts to move past. He picked up two or three places before a series of shunts knocked him down to 17th position.

“He was a bit unlucky at Shenington but quite fortunate that these results didn’t do more damage to his overall position,” said Justin. “Had he been offered 6th place in the British Championships when this season began, then I’m sure that Jonny would have grabbed it with both hands. This result follows on from 4th place in the MSA National Championships for Comers and 11th in the Little Green Man. Added to Jonny’s “O” Plate win earlier this year, I’d say it’s been a very successful season for us.”
