Shining at Shenington

Jonny put in another top class performance when he competed in the Little Green Man Championships at Shenington, even though the result sheet may not have shown it. With 47 contenders all turning out, every position was fiercely contested and he had to fight hard throughout an eventful day’s racing.

He seemed to be struggling for pace throughout Saturday’s practice sessions, but it all came together for him on Sunday afternoon. His opening Heat began disastrously when he failed to get round the first corner. After rejoining the circuit he eventually made it up to 17th spot.

Heat 2 went much better and he came through from a midfield starting position to win this one. However there was further disappointment next time out when he again became involved in a collision at the start. He did well to finish in 14th place.

All of that meant he’d be starting from grid 16 in the final. He made a cautious start to this race and actually lost three or four places early on. However, he soon began to climb back up the field and had made it up to 12th spot by half distance.

Jonny sustained a couple of knocks along the way but persevered until he caught up with a group fighting for 5th position. He eventually finished in 8th place, a very good result given the circumstances. It lifted him into 7th place in the championship table with an opportunity to go even higher after the two remaining rounds have been completed.

“Jonny’s pace at Shenington was every bit as quick as the leaders,” said Justin. “One thing he needs to learn is how to avoid collisions, especially at the start of a race when everyone is bunched together. However, that comes with experience and it’s sometimes easy to forget just how young he really is compared to the front runners. Jonny still has another four years of cadet racing ahead of him if he chooses, so there’s plenty of time for him to learn. ”
