Luckless in Lincolnshire

3rd July 2013

S1 Series for Comer Cadets Rd.4 at PFi

Two weeks after his brilliant Round 3 win at Glan ‘Y Gors, Jonny’s luck deserted him when these championships moved to the PF circuit in Lincolnshire. He took a knock in Timed Qualifying that relegated him to 8th place and that placed him in the danger zone for his two Heats. Just when it looked like he’d be taking the lead in Heat 1 his motor brought him to an abrupt standstill.

Next time out he struggled for power and started Final 1 back in 16th place on the grid. However a storming performance brought him up to 4th position immediately behind the championship leader Oliver York. Team orders went out for him to hold station in this race and he subsequently dropped a couple of places as others caught up.

It took just three laps for Jonny to hit the front in Final 2, but his good fortune didn’t last very long. On Lap 6 he was hit from behind by fellow Fusion driver Tom Wood. It cost him around 19 seconds and 20 places as he moved from 1st to last position. Wood was later excluded from the race results but this was no real consolation for Jonny who battled back to 16th spot.

“Jonny was quick all weekend and with a little more luck could have repeated his Glan ‘Y Gors win here,” said Justin afterwards. “We didn’t lodge a protest over Tom’s move. It was the race officials who took action against him without any prompting. Six members of my family have been actively involved in karting over the last 50 years and none of us have protested another driver. I wouldn’t like to be the one who broke this record but, when your own child is involved, it can be very hard sometimes.”
