S1 COMER CHAMPS Rd 3 AT GLAN ‘Y GORS 16/6/2013

Jonny produced a magical performance to win the main final at Glan ‘y Gors. On this occasion he was competing in Round 3 of the Super One National Championships for Comer powered karts against 22 of Britain’s top flight cadets.

Things didn’t quite go his way on Saturday after spinning in the Timed Qualifying session. This little error downgraded him to 10th place in the timed rankings and meant that he’d have to work hard in his two Heats. He sustained a bad knock in the 1st Heat that originally relegated him to 21st place. However, he fought back well and eventually finished 10th in this one.

Jonny made amends in race 2 by coming through to 3rd spot and setting the fastest lap as he caught up with the two leaders, Oliver York and Tom Wood. That placed him on grid 7 for Final 1. It didn’t take him long to get amongst the leading pack in this race and he settled into 3rd spot. Unfortunately for him he lost a couple of places right at the end.

Starting from 5th position in the main final, Jonny quickly made up places and joined the championship leader, Alex Quinn out in front. These two soon began to pull away from the chasing pack, establishing a lead of around 60 yards or so.

Alex began to drive defensively as they started their last lap. Jonny just had one opportunity to get past him and he seized it with both hands to win by a margin of 10 yards or so. He also set the fastest lap of this race. York finished a distant 3rd followed by Wood. Quinn still leads the championships but this result has moved Jonny up to 4th place. He will be visiting the Welsh circuit again this coming weekend for Round 2 of the British Championships. York is topping the table in this one, with Jonny lying 3rd, just 2 points behind Lewis Thompson.
