Zero Hero

2nd May 2013

Sunday April 28th 2013 will go down as an important date on Jonny’s karting CV. On this day he became British karting’s youngest ever national champion by claiming the “O” Plate Comer Cadet title at Rowrah. On his way to victory he produced a stunning performance that left onlookers gasping in astonishment.

It all seemed to go badly wrong when he was struck from behind on the first bend of the all important final. This caused him to spin his kart and relegated him to last place. More importantly, he was more than 150 yards behind the leading bunch, seemingly without any hope of catching up.

“We knew that Jonny’s kart was set up quite well for the wet conditions but when he got knocked off I thought there was no chance of a come-back,” said his dad Justin. “However, after a couple of laps it became very noticeable that he was circulating a good bit quicker than the leaders. By half distance, when he’d got through to 7th place, I thought that there might be an outside chance that he could actually catch the front runners.”

In fact he caught them up with three of the fifteen laps still remaining and, after taking 1st place, pulled well clear to win by a margin of 30 yards or more. Oliver York took 2nd place followed by Sean Butcher, Tom Wood and Lewis Thompson.

Speaking of his victory Jonny said afterwards “I knew that I was catching the leaders but didn’t think there would be enough laps for me to do it. Then Tom Wood and Oliver York bumped into each other and it gave me the chance to catch them. I’m pleased that the track was still wet because our speeds were similar in the dry and I wouldn’t have been able to catch up such a big distance”

Jonny follows a long line of previous Comer Cadet Open winners including current F1 stars Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Paul Di Resta.
