ROUND 1 OF THE LITTLE GREEN MAN SERIES AT LARKHALL 21/4/13
Jonny had a great day at Larkhall on Sunday April 21st when he took 5th place in the Little Green Man Championship opener. Setting off from 15th position on the “A” Final grid he had to overtake some of the biggest names in cadet racing.
Things got off to a good start when he pipped Kiern Jewiss for the win in Heat 1. This race was held under damp conditions, but he had to switch onto slicks for the next one. Still using gearing for the wet circuit, he looked to be down on power. A first lap collision added to his woes and initially placed him down in 24th spot. He eventually finished 16th, around 0.7 seconds off the leader’s pace.
A change of gearing worked well for him next time out and he pulled off a lap time that was only marginally slower than the winner’s best. However, when the race reverted to black & yellow quartered flags he was overtaken by a couple of karts. After hitting a wet patch later on in this race he fell back to 16th.
With 20 drivers confined to the “B” final, Jonny felt sure that he’d be amongst them. He was pleasantly surprised to find himself placed 15th on the “A” Final grid. He made a good clean getaway and soon got up into 7th position. However, by then Alex Quinn, Kiern Jewiss and Tom Wood had already opened up a fair sized gap out in front.
Jonny put in some rapid laps and eventually overtook Lewis Thompson for 6th place. Tom Douglas followed close behind but then ran off the circuit and dropped down to 11th spot. That left Jonny free to pursue Will Pettitt who was about 30 yards ahead in 5th place. Soon the gap had reduced to nothing but, whilst trying to overtake Will, Jonny made a slight mistake and Thompson snatched 6th position from him.
Around the final bend Jonny took a very wide swing and was able to exit this corner much quicker. He crossed the line a yard or so ahead of Thompson. 6th place turned into 5th after Kiern Jewiss was excluded for being 200 grams underweight.
