Third at 3 Sisters

15th April 2013

Rd 1 MSA COMER NATIONAL CHAMPS AT 3 SISTERS 7/4/2013

Jonny was in great form during the S1 opening round for Comer Cadets at the Three Sisters circuit near Wigan. His times during the Friday practice sessions were very quick and he finished Saturday morning’s Timed Qualifying stint in 5th place.

Heat 1 was a fiercely contested affair, with Jonny eventually taking 4th spot behind Oliver York, Lewis Thompson and Alex Quinn. After all 13 laps had been completed, less than half a second separated him from the winner. Despite his motor losing power halfway throughout the next heat he was still able to hold onto 5th spot, albeit more than 6 seconds behind the race winner Quinn.

These results meant that he’d set off from grid 4 in Final 1. Although the outside slot at Three Sisters is usually a big disadvantage he made a lightning start and had taken 2nd spot by the time they came round Turn 1. He briefly took the lead several corners later but found himself compromised when Alex Quinn and Tom Wood both went past.

Jonny was then engaged in a hard fought battle for 3rd spot with Oliver York, William Pettit and Alex McDade which allowed the front pair to pull away. At one stage he slipped to 6th position but managed to recover and finish 4th just behind York.

The circuit had cooled quite a bit by the time Final 2 got underway. Jonny’s small size means that he has difficulty warming his tyres in cool conditions and, despite another good start, he couldn’t match the leaders’ pace during the first few laps. However, he soon settled down as a close battle emerged for 4th position with Pettitt and a hard charging Lewis Thompson. Having dropped down to 6th spot he pulled off a courageous last bend manoeuvre to take 5th place from Pettitt.

In this year’s S1 championships, points are awarded during the heats and when these were accounted for, he emerged in 3rd spot. “We were delighted with this particular result and it has given Jonny a good solid base for the championship season,” said his Dad, Justin.
