Rich rewards at Rowrah

13th Novemer 2012

Jonny produced another confident display on Sunday, November 11th when he pulled off a finely judged win on his home circuit. It was his 5th victory at Rowrah and brought with it an added bonus of the club championship despite missing out on a couple of rounds. He is now the youngest driver ever to win a championship title on this circuit.

It all came about after Jonny adjusted his carburettor half way through the final. This produced a richer fuel mixture giving him more power out of the corners. Until that point it looked as though he would have to settle for 2nd place as the race leader Jack Armstrong had opened out a gap of around 25 yards and was clearly quicker.

From 2nd place on the grid Jonny had outsmarted Jack into Turn 1 but his lead lasted for little more than a lap when he was forced wide by the older driver who immediately began to pull away. Half way through the 12 lap race Jonny was at least a dozen karts lengths behind, seemingly with no chance of making up the deficit. After making the small adjustment, however, he was visibly quicker.

Within the space of three laps, he’d caught up with Jack and pulled off a neatly executed overtaking manoeuvre at Stewarts Sweep. After that it was simply a case of making sure there were no mistakes for a further two laps before the chequered flag welcomed him home as a very worthy winner.

“Is he actually eight years old or twenty eight?” enquired a Rotax competitor. It had been that sort of performance you’d expect from someone so much older.
