Jonny produced another top class performance on his home circuit and only a collision in Heat 2 prevented him from returning a perfect score. He now lies 2nd in the championship standings to Matthew Easton, having narrowed the gap by 40 points. Although Matthew is ostensibly 31 points ahead, when dropped scores are taken into account Jonny actually has a comfortable lead.
His day got off to a good start when he won the opening Heat ahead of Easton. Next time out, though, he received a set back after coming off the circuit and initially dropping down to 10th place about 150 yards or more behind the leaders. However, he recovered well to eventually finish 7th and was visibly quicker than everyone else.
In his 3rd Heat Jonny set off from grid 7 but quickly made it through into 2nd place about 30 yards behind Sam Kirkpatrick. After hunting down and eventually overtaking the leader he won this race comfortably with more than 50 yards to spare. Easton lost valuable championship points after failing to start this race.
Despite setting off from pole position in the Final, Jonny actually dropped down to 3rd place initially. However he’d regained the lead within half a lap but couldn’t manage to pull away from Kirkpatrick who remained doggedly some three or four yards behind. At one point Sam actually took the lead but Jonny fought back immediately and recaptured 1st place. After that there were no real threats from Sam even though one or two back markers gave Jonny a few anxious moments.
It was a very confident performance all round and Jonny showed that he should be a strong contender for major championship honours in 2013.
