No sparks for Jonny

S1 Round 5 at Rowrah, August 18/19

21st August 201

Jonny was in sparkling form all weekend, but sadly there was no spark in the Final when his motor cut out on the rolling lap. Earlier on he’d raised a few eyebrows by recording the fourth quickest lap in Timed Qualifying.

This gave him a good grid position for the opening race and, with jusy 9over two laps remaining, he nipped past Ross Martin to take 3rd position well ahead of the battle for 5th. Martin fought back almost immediately and reclaimed 3rd spot, but this allowed the others to catch up. With two corners remaining, Jonny still held 4th place but was forced wide and dropped down to 8th.

Heat 2 was another fiercely contested affair and Jonny again found himself in 8th place at the finish, a long distance ahead of the 9th placed contender. These two results meant that he’d be starting Final 1 on Sunday off grid 7.

“We were all delighted with Jonny’s performance on Saturday and he’s clearly quick enough to live with the front-runners,” said Justin. “When the going gets really tough he often loses out, but that’s to be expected given that he’s still very young for this particular competition.”

Heavy rain during Sunday’s 1st Final provided difficult track conditions for Jonny and he slipped to 15th at the finish.“In truth, we made an error of judgement with the tyre pressures and Jonny wasn’t quite as quick as he could have been,” said his grandfather, Terry. “We altered things for Final 2, but then the motor cut out before this race had even started. Racing in S1 this year has certainly been a great learning experience for him and he’s been getting stronger with every meeting. ”

Jonny will be taking part in the August Bank holiday meeting at Rowrah this weekend before travelling down to Clay Pigeon in Dorset for round 6 of S1
