Home win

13th June 2012

ROWRAH, 10th JUNE

Jonny notched up his second race victory of the season with a superbly controlled performance on his home circuit at Rowrah. After setting the fastest time in all three of his heats he started the final as a clear favourite.

Sam Kirkpatrick, a seasoned campaigner at Rowrah and winner of the club’s “O” Plate title last year, occupied pole position for this race. Sam showed great determination and took an immediate lead. Things weren’t working out so well for Jonny, though, and he dropped down to 4th spot coming out of Turn 1 At this stage he was more than 20 yards behind the leader. He quickly moved up into 3rd spot and began to close on the 2nd placed runner, Sam Rogerson. Passing Rogerson after 3 laps, he went into the lead next time around.

Jonny led for the next five laps with Kirkpatrick glued to his rear bumper. With three laps remaining, Sam managed to get his wheels in front but Jonny fought back immediately. There were a few nail biting moments after that, but the eight year old driver kept his cool to win a very exciting race. Owen Hardy took 3rd spot about eighty yards behind.

“It was an exciting race, perhaps a little bit too exciting from my point of view,” declared Justin. “I was very pleased at how well Jonny handled the pressure from Sam. Many drivers who are a good few years older than Jonny find it difficult to lead under these circumstances and so it was another valuable step in his development.”
