Super show from Jonny

15th May 2012

PS1 Rd.2 at Whilton Mill, 13th May 2012

Jonny caught the eye of many onlookers at Whilton Mill, where he performed superbly all weekend. Despite being the youngest competitor in S1 this year, he managed to match the top drivers for pace. In Saturday’s Timed Qualifying Session, he emerged 11th quickest in his group and 17th fastest overall. However, just 0.3 seconds separated him from Hugo Bentley-Ellis who had topped the group.

He finished 9th in his first heat, but was in amongst the pack contesting 5th place. His dad Justin praised him for a tremendous performance in this race but there was an even better result next time out. From 12th place on the grid, he battled his way to 3rd spot, a result that earned him grid 6 for Final 1 on Sunday.

Josh Smith was a convincing winner of the first final ahead of Zak Fulk and Cameron Roberts, but there was a terrific battle for 6th place involving 10 karts. Jonny was in the middle of it all but kept a cool head to eventually finish 10th. He was involved in a similarly hard battle next time out, finishing in 12th position. Fulk won this one from Enaam Ahmed with Roberts taking 3rd spot ahead of Smith.

“Jonny is competing against the top cadet drivers in Britain, many of whom are four or five years older,” said Justin. “We were concerned that entering S1 within weeks of reaching his 8th birthday would be a step too far, but we’re absolutely delighted with the way he’s responded to what is a very difficult challenge.”
