Rhapsody in the rain at Rowrah

8th/9th April 2012

After struggling with an ill handling kart for much of the day, Jonny managed to finish a very creditable 2nd behind Jack Brailsford at Rowrah on Easter Monday. From 4th position on the grid, he quickly elevated himself to 3rd by executing a daring overtaking manoeuvre on Sam Kirkpatrick. At that stage, however, it looked as though the two leaders, Jack Brailsford and Dexter Patterson, were both a little quicker.

Jonny stuck doggedly to his task and with two laps remaining he began to narrow the gap between himself and 2nd placed driver Patterson. On the very last lap he outfoxed his opponent and swept through into 2nd spot. Dexter tried hard to win the position back, but Jonny kept his cool right up to the chequered flag.

Sunday’s racing had been conducted in rather more favourable conditions, although a prolonged shower just before the finals had left the circuit very damp and slippery. Sam Kirkpatrick won this one while Jonny was involved in a hard fought battle with Sam Gerrard for 2nd place. He withstood tremendous pressure right up until the final lap when Gerrard managed to nip past.

Jorge - Chief Mechanic! - prepares Jonny's kart for the final

“We worked hard on Jonny’s kart all weekend but couldn’t get the set-up quite right for him,” said Justin. “Halfway through Monday’s racing we discovered that the chassis was twisted, probably the result of a collision at PF 7 days earlier. We did our best to straighten it and the handling certainly improved afterwards. Jonny responded well and I was proud of the way he coped with a kart that certainly wasn’t at its best.

Jonny’s next race meeting will be at Glan Y Gors on 15th April. A week afterwards he’ll take a gigantic leap by tackling the opening S1 round at PF.
