LGM CHAMPIONSHIPS, FINAL ROUND AT PFI 4/10/2015

38 years after his grandfather, Terry Edgar, won a similar title, Jonny has been crowned as the Little Green Man Champion for 2015. He now follows in the wheel-tracks of former cadet stars such as Jack Harvey, Jordon Lennox-Lamb, Ben Barnicoat, Alex Quinn and Tom Wood.

He achieved this feat with a masterly tactical performance at PF that left his only rival, Harry Thompson, with little opportunity to claw back the ten point deficit accumulated over eight previous rounds. As the final got underway late on Sunday afternoon, Jonny knew that, regardless of his own he finishing position, nothing less than a win for Thompson would deprive him of the crown. If Harry won then he would need a top four finish himself.

Earlier in the day, his title hopes had taken a slight dent when he was knocked off the circuit whilst leading a Heat. It dropped him down to 14th position, but a brilliant drive in the next one was rewarded with an unlikely victory from grid 16. That placed him alongside Harry on row 3 for the Final.

“You can never be certain what’s going to happen in races such as this,” Jonny explained. “Lorcan Hanafin and Taylor Barnard both made a good start, so rather than chase after them and pull the pack along with me, I thought that my best plan was to let them go. Harry got past me after three laps but never looked like catching the two front runners. I covered my options by shadowing him just in case anything happened to the two leaders.”

Thompson actually dropped down to 21st spot after coming off on the final lap. In the end, Barnard won from Hanafin, with Dexter Patterson 3rd and Jonny 4th. “It actually was his lowest finish in the championships,” said Justin afterwards, “but that didn’t worry me one little bit. Our main objective was to secure the title and Jonny did everything to make certain that happened.
