Mixed bag at Buckmore

17th June 2015

British Cadet Championships, Rd.3, June 13th & 14th 2015

Jonny enjoyed mixed fortunes down in Kent when he was involved in one or two incidents, yet still kept the championship lead over Dexter Patterson.

After setting the pace during free practice it came as a surprise when he finished down in 9th position on the Timed Qualifying list. With Dexter emerging as the quickest driver from this session it wasn’t the best way to start his weekend. It meant that Jonny would be in the thick of things during both his Heats with an increased risk of sustaining a knock.

After working his way up to 3rd position in Heat 1 he dropped three places on the last lap. Dexter won this one and was now just one point behind Jonny in the championship table. 3rd place for Jonny in Heat 2, compared to another perfect score from Dexter, placed the Scottish driver a point ahead of him.

From 3rd position on the grid in Final 1, he made an excellent start and went immediately into 1st place. His lead was short lived, though, because Dexter soon forced his way past. Jonny lost a lot of places and some valuable yardage as a result of this manoeuvre. However, within a lap, he’d recovered to 3rd spot and concentrated on closing down the gap of around 25 yards to Joshua Rattican in 2nd place.

By half distance, he’d caught and passed the two leaders, taking Harry Thompson along with him. Thompson rook over at the front and Jonny briefly found himself in 3rd place as Patterson also took advantage. When the opportunity arose, he nipped back up to 2nd and began working with Thompson to gradually pull away from Patterson who soon found himself immersed in a battle for 3rd spot. Thompson eventually won, but Jonny was more than happy with 2nd place as it placed him back firmly in the championship driving seat, especially after an eventful couple of laps had dropped Patterson down to 12th position.

Jonny took an immediate lead in Final 2 and held this position up until half distance when a rapid looking Patterson came charging through. From leading this race, Jonny suddenly found himself dumped down to 8th position. Things went from bad to worse after he went off the circuit trying to avoid a collision ahead of him. Dirt on his tyres hampered him further and he lost even more ground before recovering to 5th spot. Thompson chalked up his 2nd victory of the day with Patterson recording 2nd place.

“It wasn’t an ideal result for us,” confessed Justin, “but the damage could have been a lot worse. Jonny has kept the championship lead and that’s something we’d have settled for on Saturday evening.”
