Jonny fought back from a series of mishaps to eventually take 3rd place at Whilton Mill. Despite dropping down to 3rd spot behind Harry Thompson and Dexter Patterson in the championship table, his fighting performance gave a good indication of better results to come.

“We got the tyre pressures wrong in his Heats and it meant that he’d be setting off from grid 6 in the Final,” said Justin. “That was a shame because he’d been extremely quick during Saturday’s practice sessions. Jonny remained very calm throughout Sunday’s racing and was still confident of achieving a good result in the Final.”

Things didn’t quite go to plan on the opening lap of this race, as he found himself badly positioned and dropped down to 12th spot. However, he quickly began to make up places and went into the lead on lap 8. He only held this exalted position for half a lap before Thompson dived up his inside taking Patterson through with him. Thompson’s manoeuvre cost Jonny dearly as it slowed him sufficiently on the exit for another three karts to come storming past. In the confusion, both Thompson and Patterson were able to break away and immediately establish a lead of over 30 yards.

More problems were to face Jonny shortly afterwards. After getting back up to 3rd spot, still with a good chance of catching the leaders, he was forced off onto the grass by Albert Carter. It dropped him down to 10th but, rather more crucially, his tyres were now dirty and he lost valuable yardage before getting them clean once more. Patiently he began to pick up more places and took over 3rd place on the last lap. By that stage Patterson had moved into the lead from Thompson and these two were 60 or 70 yards ahead of the rest.”

“I was pleased at the way he kept fighting right up until the end,” said Justin afterwards. “His performance deserved a better reward, but you have to take the rough with the smooth in karting and 3rd place definitely isn’t a bad result.”
