Third consecutive '0' Plate for Jonny

Two years ago he became the youngest ABkC “O” Plate champion in karting history, claiming this title just a couple of months past his 9th birthday. On Sunday, Jonny created another record by winning it for the 3rd time in succession.



This is a unique achievement, never equalled by any other young driver, including the likes of David Coulthard, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton who featured prominently in British karting before moving onto greater things.

Jonny’s Dad, Justin, was a four times winner of the senior title but he never managed to win it three times in a row. “It’s much more difficult for a cadet, because, by the time they are good enough, they’ve generally reached the top of their age group,” he explained. “Jonny scored his first success at a very young age and so he’s been able to repeat it a couple of times since then.” This year’s event took place at Rowrah, just a couple of miles from Jonny’s home and he started off as the hot favourite. The weekend got off to a good start, as he notched up victories in both of his Heats. He then won a thrilling battle against his old rival Dexter Patterson in the Pre-final.



“None of these races counted for much,” said Jonny. “The only one that really mattered was the Grand Final. Dexter and I quickly broke away from the chasing pack, but he was following close behind me so I couldn’t afford to make a mistake on any of the 18 laps. On the last lap I slowed my pace just to make sure that there was no easy way through for him and it all worked out well for me.”



Jonny’s win means that he can continue racing throughout 2015 with the coveted zero on his number plate. This weekend, he’ll be at Rowrah once again competing in the British S1 Championship Opener. There are seven rounds of this Series held on circuits throughout Britain. Last year he finished 3rd in the Championships and hopes to improve by two places this time.
