Club Meeting - 8th March
With the British Open Championships just five weeks away Jonny faced plenty of high quality competition on his home circuit. However, he was immediately on the pace and continued to lap significantly quicker than all his rivals throughout Saturday’s practice sessions, all of which took place in damp conditions.
He suffered a minor setback in Sunday’s opening Heat after being shunted off the circuit. However, he recovered well to eventually finish 4th in this race. He started Heat 2 from 13th on the grid but soon came through into 2nd spot. By that time, though, Josh Rattican had established a lead of more than 60 yards. Jonny worked hard at closing the gap and took over 1st place with just over a lap remaining. He won this race with almost ten yards to spare.
The circuit had completely dried in time for Heat 3, but cool track conditions meant that many contenders opted to remain on wet tyres. Once again Jonny found himself starting from grid 13 but by half distance he was already comfortably ahead of the field. On this occasion, Matthew Hunt took 2nd position about 70 yards behind.
All of the top contenders came out on slicks for the Final. Jonny took an immediate lead with Albert Carter tucked in tightly behind. These two opened up a gap of some 30 yards before Joseph Taylor appeared in 3rd place. Try as he might, Jonny couldn’t quite manage to break away from Carter until a couple of laps from the end.
One of the back markers had hit a barrier at Iredale’s Hairpin, leaving water on the circuit. Jonny spotted the hazard and slowed sufficiently to negotiate this bend safely. Albert, though, maintained his usual speed and got into a skid that cost him around 20 yards. Taylor, along with most of the following drivers got into similar difficulties. That left Jonny to claim a comfortable victor ahead of Carter, Taylor and Lorcan Hanafin.
