After missing two earlier rounds due to a broken wrist, Jonny had written off his chances of finishing amongst the top 15 prize-winners in this year’s Little Green Man Championships. An excellent showing at Shenington two weeks earlier had improved his prospects somewhat, but he still needed to be on top form for the final round at PF.
In his opening Heat he gained 21 places to eventually finish 5th, setting the fastest lap time by a comfortable margin. He followed this with a win next time out. Just a few yards after the start of his 3rd Heat, Jonny was tagged from behind, forcing him to spin through 180 degrees. That left him with a lot of catching up to do but he kept a cool head and climbed up to 12th spot.
That meant that he would set off on grid 5 for the all important “A” Final. After a cautious start he lost no time in taking over the lead of this race. He held 1st place for more than half of the race before Lewis Thompson took over at the front. Joe Turney remained tucked in behind Jonny and these three gradually pulled clear of the pack.
With less than two laps remaining Jonny passed Lewis for the lead but he then lost out to Turney. Two corners later he’d recovered 1st place once more but by then six other drivers had caught up with the leading pack. Everything changed at lightening pace as Tom Wood made a brave dive that brought him from 4th spot into 1st position and Zac Robertson also followed him through. Thompson dropped down to 5th and Turney got into a tangle with Teddy Wilson.
By holding onto 3rd place Jonny moved from 24th in the championship table to 13th, a position he shares with Brandon Martland. “We’re very happy with that,” said Justin afterwards. “More importantly from our point of view is that he has put in some very strong performances as the championship season drew to a close. That’s always a good sign for the following year.”
