“Excellent speed, shame about the result” was the verdict after Jonny’s performance at Shenington. 7th place in the final amongst such a high quality field certainly wasn’t bad, but his performance throughout the entire weekend had promised to bring much greater rewards.
Things got off to a good start in Saturday’s opening Heat when he claimed an excellent win after catching and overtaking the championship favourite, Tom Wood. The next Heat on Sunday morning offered up a rather more difficult challenge, however, as Jonny had to start this one from 26th place. Incredibly he gained 15 places on the opening lap and took over 1st position half way through this race to record an astonishing victory.
It looked like being a hat trick of wins in Heat 3 which he led for most of the way until Josh Rafferty forced him wide with just one more corner to negotiate. Finlay Bunce seized this opportunity to take 2nd spot but 3rd place for Jonny was more than good enough to ensure pole for the Final.
Jonny made a quick getaway in the Final, closely followed by Tom Wood. “Under normal circumstances these two would have pulled away from everyone else and then been able to fight it out between themselves,” said Justin. “However there was a very strong headwind developing and this made it almost impossible for anyone out in front to open up a decent gap.”
Consequently the lead kept changing hands and we suddenly had nine or ten karts fighting it out. Going into the chicane, Jonny was struck by a following kart and, despite making a strong recovery, his race was effectively destroyed.
Even so, he left Shenington with three more trophies added to his impressive collection. Apart from the cup he earned by finishing 7th there was one for pole position and another for setting the fastest lap of this race. “I was disappointed not to win but I know that I’m quick enough to be up at the front when we go to PF for Round 8 in two weeks time,” he said.
