With one round still remaining Jonny has taken a narrow lead in the British Championships. He emerged from Little Rissington as the top scorer and now heads Teddy Wilson in the championship table by 7 points with Kiern Jewiss a further 14 behind.
Should he be successful in the final round at PF Jonny will become the youngest champion in karting history. He is already the youngest to win a British Open title and now holds two of these prizes.
“Jonny’s position isn’t quite as good as it may look on paper,” his dad Justin pointed out. “At this stage you really have to take dropped scores into account. Once having done that, Kiern Jewiss actually holds a very strong lead by 19 points and Jonny is just 2 ahead of Teddy. Nevertheless, he will be going to PF with a chance of taking the title and that’s better than we could have reasonably hoped for.”
Kiern and Teddy are both in their final year of cadet racing. Should he choose to remain in the class, Jonny actually has a further 3 seasons ahead of him after this one. Virtually all of the previous title holders have left it until their final year to become champion, so Jonny has a hard task ahead of him.
It looked as though Wilson would leave Little Rissington as the championship leader but for a bit of over exuberance in Final 2. He’d already won the 1st Final ahead of Jonny and got off to a good start next time out. After Zac Robertson overtook him, however, Teddy tried rather too hard on the last lap. Zac went off on the grass and subsequently protested Teddy’s move. Race officials decided that Teddy was to blame for the accident and docked him a lap.
Jonny had found himself badly compromised in this race after waiting for the starter to raise his flag. “Everyone behind me seemed to anticipate the start and I found myself back in 8th or 9th place after Turn 1,” he said. He eventually finished 4th but came out on top after points from the Heats and Finals were added together.
