Clever at Kartmasters

10th August 2014

TV Kartmasters GP at PFI (August 1st - 3rd 2014)

Jonny overcame handling problems to secure a very respectable result at the Kartmasters GP. Like quite a few other top stars, he encountered difficulties during Friday’s Timed Qualified session, finishing down in 14th spot. That made the afternoon Heats somewhat problematical and he could finish no higher than 9th in the first one. Heat 2 seemed to be going a good bit better and he quickly moved up into 4th spot. However, a collision half way through this race dropped him down to 20th.

Saturday’s Timed Qualifying didn’t exactly go to plan, either, as he found himself 12th on the list, two tenths slower than Josh Rafferty who posted the fastest time. Once again, fortune deserted him in Heat 3 as he dropped from 5th down to 23rd on the last lap. On a wet circuit he held 2nd spot for much of the next Heat but got involved in a spin that knocked him back to 5th place.

That placed him 14th on the grid for Sunday’s Pre-final. Surprisingly, he got amongst the leaders almost straight away and was soon occupying 1st position until an accident brought out the Battenburg flag. That bunched the field up behind him and he dropped half a dozen places in the space of one lap. In a mad dash for the finishing line he lost a couple more spots and finished 9th.

None of these races counted for very much as everything hinged on the Grand Final. Jonny made a lightning start in this one and almost immediately moved up into 2nd spot, just inches behind his Fusion team-mate Teddy ilson. For more than half of this race these two were able to pull away from their challengers. Suddenly, though, Jonny’s kart began to lose speed and he was soon swallowed up by the chasing pack.

At one stage, he dropped down to 9th, before clever positioning of his kart on the final lap brought him up to 4th place, just a few yards behind the eventual winner. The day belonged to Kiern Jewiss, who had staged a remarkable recovery to win this race from the very back.

“In reality, Jonny didn’t have the speed to win this one,” confessed Justin. “He performed much better than his equipment should have allowed and we never really got to grips with the problems all weekend. I think 4th place was a better result than we had any right to expect under the circumstances, but hopefully we’ll have things sorted in time for the next S1 round at Rissington.”
