BRITISH CADET CHAMPIONSHIPS Rd 4 AT LARKHALL 29/6/2014

There was no time to lose on a hot summer’s day at Larkhall when Jonny found himself involved in some heated battles. The racing was fast and furious all weekend and positions could change dramatically in the blink of an eye.

Like a good few other leading stars, Jonny had found himself compromised by traffic in the Timed Qualifying session. He finished this session down in 10th position, the only consolation being that two of his championship rivals, Tom Wood and Dexter Patterson, were even slower.

Jonny made up places rapidly in Heat 1, getting up to 2nd spot before being overtaken by Teddy Wilson with just over a lap remaining. A similar result looked on the cards next time out after Jonny had worked his way up to 3rd position and looked set to challenge for the lead. However, he was forced onto the grass and immediately dropped outside the top ten before eventually finishing 9th.

It meant that Jonny would be starting Final 1 off grid 4. The outside lane at Larkhall isn’t a good starting position and Jonny immediately dropped down to 6th spot. After moving up to 3rd position he was forced wide and a gaggle of karts came through. That dropped him down to 7th position, but crucially he was now more than 30 yards behind the two leaders. By the end, he’d recovered to 4th place from which position he’d start Final 2.

Despite dropping down to 5th at the start of this race, Jonny soon moved up to 3rd spot. By half distance he’d taken the lead pulling his team-mate Zach Robertson along with him. These two then pulled out a gap of 15 yards or more over Kiern Jewiss. However a couple of laps from the end Zach misjudged a corner slightly and nudged into the side of Jonny’s kart.

The incident wasn’t sufficient to knock Jonny off but it did allow Jewiss to recover lost ground and he shot through into the lead. Jonny fought back and almost snatched 1st place at the finishing line but it wasn’t quite enough as 0.07secs separated them. Teddy Wilson finished an equally close 3rd, some 25 yards ahead of Lewis Thompson and Tom Wood.
