Good enough at Glan Y Gors

28th May 2014

BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS, Rd.3, 25/5/2014

Finishing 4th in both Finals at Glan Y’ Gors didn’t amount to the best set of results for Jonny, especially after he’d set the fastest time in three of his four races and come close in the other one. Nevertheless, his points haul from this meeting was good enough for him to retain 2nd place in the Championship table. More importantly, he’d held his nerve in difficult circumstances and kept comfortably within range of the championship leader Kiern Jewiss.

Track conditions at Glan ‘Y Gors remained tricky throughout the entire weekend, with wet tyres and slicks in regular use. Jonny was quick in the rain and also maintained his advantage on a drying circuit. He finished 4th in his two Heats on Saturday and set the fastest time in both of them.

Tom Wood got off to a flying start in Final 1, held in dry conditions, and immediately pulled out a big lead. Jonny was caught out at the start and dropped down to 10th position. However, he soon picked up places and took 3rd place behind Teddy Wilson. They quickly caught up to Wood, forcing him to take a defensive line. That allowed others to catch up and soon a train of eight karts had built up.

Wilson managed to get into 1st spot, but Jonny’s attempt to follow through was blocked. He dropped down to 7th position at one stage but eventually finished 4th behind Wilson, Jewiss and Lewis Thompson. Alex McDade finished behind Jonny, with Wood having dropped down to 6th.

Heavy rain meant that wet tyres were used in Final 2. Jonny made a decent start in this one, but was forced wide at Turn 3 and he dropped down to 9th place. He survived one or two scares and, with four laps remaining, went ahead of Wood to take 2nd spot, just a yard behind the leader, Jewiss. Wood fought back and Jonny found himself forced onto the grass as a stream of karts went past him.

Now back in 9th spot he kept his cool and gradually picked up places to finish this race in 4th position behind Jewiss, Thompson and Wilson. As a result, Jewiss has increased his championship lead over Jonny by 6 points. He is now 18 points ahead with three rounds still remaining. It’s still a very tight race for the title though. There’s a maximum of 150 points available at each round, so even the 5th place man Tom Wood, lying 50 points adrift, is still in with a fair shout.
