Mixed bag for Jonny at Super 1
13th May 2014
BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS Rd 2 AT ROWRAH 4/5/2014
Jonny had a frustrating weekend at Rowrah despite setting some very quick times in both wet and dry conditions. Despite losing his championship lead, however, he could console himself on Sunday evening with the thought that things could have turned out much worse. As it is he will travel to Glan Y Gors for Round 3 holding 2nd spot just 13 points behind the leader.
The weekend started very promisingly as he set a fast pace in both Friday and Saturday’s free practice sessions. He ought to have secured pole position for Final 1 as he finished both of his heats ahead of everyone else. Following a protest lodged by Joe Turney after Heat 1, however, on board cameras showed that both karts had touched on the opening lap of this race. Jonny was adjudged to be at fault and subsequently received a 5 place penalty, the minimum allowed for this infringement.
This placed him down on row 3 for the first Final held in very wet conditions. There was a portent of things to come when Jonny’s engine failed to start. However, he was able to join the pack after a single rolling lap, albeit on tyres that hadn’t been warmed sufficiently.
Even so, he made a good start and had made up a couple of places before taking a knock early on in this race. This set-back started off a chain of events that resulted in a couple of spins plus an off-track excursion to avoid another collision. Dexter Patterson set the quickest lap with Jonny just a few hundredths slower. Whereas Patterson finished 4th, however, Jonny completed the race back in 10th spot with a big task ahead of him in Final 2
Starting this race off grid 10, he got involved in other people’s accidents and was soon almost 100 yards behind the leaders. However, he set the fastest lap time which enabled him to make up places and by the end he had actually caught up with the front three, too late, unfortunately, to improve upon 4th position.
