Last lap turmoil at LGM opener
14th April 2014
Little Green Man Championship: Rd.1 @ PFi (6th April 2014)
Jonny ran out of luck on the last lap of the Little Green Man Final at PF but he could draw plenty of encouragement from his strong performance throughout the weekend. 68 drivers took part in this particular round and competition for places was at its most fierce.
He got off to a good start on Saturday after sustaining strong pressure from Dexter Patterson to win Heat 1. His next Heat was held early on Sunday morning under damp conditions and he did well to finish 2nd behind Lewis Thompson. Despite setting off from grid 22, he came through well to take 4th spot on his next outing, but it was Patterson who claimed pole position for the final with Jonny alongside him.
Patterson made a dreadful start in the Final and Jonny took full advantage to take an early lead. Although Tom Wood temporarily relieved him of this position, he fought back immediately and led almost up to half distance when Wood again assumed command. These two tried hard to establish a gap over Lewis Thompson, Kiern Jewiss, Teddy Wilson and Joe Turney, but a strong headwind was making things difficult for the frontrunners.
With four laps remaining, Jonny overtook Wood once again only to lose out a few minutes later when Thompson forced him wide. That also allowed Wilson and Wood to come through. As they began their final lap, Jonny was back up to 3rd just a yard or so behind Wilson who now led Wood.
It looked as though these three had broken clear but, with Wilson forced onto the defensive, a slow last lap allowed seven or eight other karts to join them. Suddenly, Jonny found himself pushed onto the rough and he dropped down to 8th spot. He managed to pick up one more position before this race ended with Wilson holding on for a hard fought victory.
“It didn’t provide us with the result we could have wished for, but this was a fantastic race and Jonny proved that he’s got the pace on a circuit that hasn’t always suited him,” said Justin afterwards. “I think he’ll be going up to Larkhall for Round 2 in very good shape.”
