Rocking at Rowrah

18th March 2014

Club Meeting - 9th March 2014: The stars all came out at Rowrah with 30 IAME cadet drivers entered for this meeting, including most of the championship favourites. Jonny set the pace early on during testing but couldn’t retain this superiority once the circuit dried out. However, a change of motor did the trick and he was soon matching Teddy Wilson’s lap times on Saturday. These two looked to be appreciably quicker than anyone else.

After setting off from grid 16 in Sunday’s opening Heat, he drove steadily to eventually finish 4th behind Teddy Wilson, Kiern Jewiss and Lewis Thompson. He made up 18 places next time out to finish a fine 3rd behind Wilson and Jewiss, setting fastest lap along the way. Starting off grid 2, he cruised to a comfortable victory in Heat 3 and this result earned him a place on row 2 for the Final.

Despite taking an early lead in the Final, Jonny was passed by a flying Lewis Thompson. A slight mistake lost him valuable yards and Jewiss was quick to take advantage. Just as these two began to close on the leader, Jewiss went into the chicane too quickly and spun his kart. Although Jonny was able to take evasive action it allowed Wilson into 2nd spot.

Half way around the last lap Jonny found a gap that allowed him to overtake Wilson and move up into 2nd place. However, despite setting fastest lap, he’d left it too late for an attack on 1st position.

“I was quite happy with Jonny’s speed today, but he made a rare mistake that probably cost him the race,” said Justin, “Hopefully that’s something to go in his learning book and he’ll benefit from the experience.
