Powerful at PFi Rd.1. of the Winter Series

3rd December 2013

1/12/2013 - Jonny proved that he’ll be a leading contender for major honours next season by putting in a powerful performance at the PFI circuit. Virtually all of Britain’s top cadet stars were included in a strong entry list of more than 40 runners.

The racing programme had to be shortened due to several accidents and, instead of the normal Heats, Timed Qualifying determined grid positions for a single Final. Despite going out on wet tyres when drying conditions make slicks a better choice, Jonny qualified 2nd behind Tom Wood.

When the main event finally got underway he made a good start, slotting in behind Wood, but soon came under strong pressure from Zach Robertson and Kiern Jewiss. Although this caused him to drop back temporarily into 5th spot, he soon recovered and began the final lap in a very strong 3rd position.

With the chequered flag in sight he took over 1st place as Wood and Jewiss both ran wide. Unfortunately his race came to an end at the next corner when Joe Turney ran into the back of him.

“Joe was honest enough to admit that he’d made a driving error and we didn’t push the matter any further,” said Justin. “I wasn’t bothered about the result. The main thing for me was that, in conditions which weren’t ideal for his driving style, Jonny proved quick enough to challenge the likes of Tom Wood, Kiern Jewiss and Zach Robertson who, I’m sure, will be frontrunners next season.”

Sunday’s racing capped a good weekend for Jonny. On Friday he’d attended Cumbria’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards Evening. He was delighted to receive a “Rising Star” award in recognition of winning the AKkC “O” Plate and finishing 6th in this year’s British Championships.
