Jonny struggled for pace throughout much of the weekend but a change of motor on Sunday afternoon improved his lap times significantly.
He’d raced at Kimbolton several weeks earlier and looked very quick on this flat circuit, built 54 years earlier on a WW2 airfield. Despite claiming 5th place in Heat 1, however, it became clear that he was a good bit slower than the top contenders.
Alterations were made to his kart along with a change of engine in time for the next Heat. It wasn’t possible to determine whether or not these had worked because, unfortunately, he didn’t make it round the first bend after being struck from behind and forced into a spin.
He started Heat 3 from 22nd position and it soon became evident that the changes had worked as he climbed through the field to eventually finish in 9th place. Championship favourite Oliver York followed him throughout most of this race but Jonny was able to resist his advances.
He started the final off grid 18 but came storming through to 9th position on the opening lap, picking up a few more places as this race progressed. With 2 laps still remaining he was lying 6th when Teddy Wilson’s kart collided with him. That sent Jonny spinning off the track and lost him six places.
“It wasn’t Teddy’s fault,” he said afterwards. “He was hit from the driver behind and it knocked him into me. I was disappointed to finish back in 12th spot but I’m still lying 9th in the Championship table and a decent result at PF could put me further up the table.”
