BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS RD 4 AT CLAY PIGEON 25/8/2013
Following on from a good showing in the Little Green Man at Shenington, Jonny produced another cracking performance at Clay. His 2nd position in Timed Qualifying confirmed that he had sufficient pace to take on the top drivers.
Saturday’s heats were blessed with warm sunshine and he turned on the tap in the first to finish 2nd, just a whisker behind Oliver York, the top title contender. Things didn’t run quite so smoothly next time out and he had to settle for 6th place. That was good enough to earn a grid 4 starting slot for Sunday’s 1st Final behind Tom Wood, Alex Quinn and Tyler Chesterton.
Wood and Quinn swapped 1st position for much of this race, with Jonny holding a top 4 position on every lap. As the race neared its conclusion Wood began to defend hard, thus allowing a queue to form behind him. These tactics didn’t quite pay off as Will Pettitt was able to win with a last gasp effort and Jonny grabbed 2nd spot. It was a very close race with less than a second separating 1st and 6th places.
Jonny experienced motor problems in Final 2, and, instead of starting from 2nd place he began this race back in 9th spot. His motor seemed very sluggish coming out of corners and it was later discovered that a piston ring had been sticking. Even so, he still managed to finish 12th out of 30 starters and came away with a good points haul.
“I was especially pleased with Jonny’s performance in Final 1,” said Justin afterwards. “When the pack all bunched together on the final lap I fully expected him to be bullied out of position. Instead he held his ground very well and actually gained a place at the finish.”
After a six hour journey home, Jonny was out in action again for Rowrah’s 50th Anniversary meeting on August Monday. He obviously wasn’t feeling any ill effects and managed to notch up three Heat wins. Jack Brailsford pushed him hard in the Final but it was Jonny who ultimately made it a clean sweep of wins.
