Rd 1 OF THE MSA BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 19/5/2013 - Jonny put in a powerful performance last weekend when he claimed 3rd place in the S1 British Championship table. 40 of Britain’s top cadets contested this opening round in the championships and the competition was always going to be fierce.
Saturday’s racing took place run in extremely wet and challenging conditions. After qualifying 9th in the timed session, he drove consistently well in both of his Heats to record 4th and 5th places. This earned him a 2nd row grid for Sunday’s first Final. An earlier shower of rain meant that everyone came out for this race on wet tyres.
Jonny’s path was blocked at Turn 1 and he had to run off the circuit before resuming back in 8th place. By that time, the leading contenders had pulled well clear. However, he applied himself to the task ahead and eventually climbed up to 5th spot. Under dry conditions, he remained convinced that a podium finish in Final 2 was within his grasp.
On this occasion he had a clear run through Turn 1 and immediately seized 3rd place, improving to 2nd position on the very next corner. He took the lead from Oliver York with less than a lap completed and held this position for half of the race. They were able to pull well clear of the chasing pack before York took over at half distance.
Over the last couple of laps, Oliver drove very defensively to prevent Jonny from overtaking. Inevitably, this allowed William Pettitt and Alex Quinn to close the gap. Any one of these four could have won the race but York held on to 1st place with Jonny claiming a well deserved 2nd. Lewis Thompson, who had narrowly finished 2nd behind York in Final 1 finished 7th. After including points scored in the Heats Thompson now lies 2nd in the championship table two points ahead of Jonny with Oliver York enjoying an early lead.
There are 5 remaining rounds of the Championships at Glan ‘y Gors, Larkhall, Clay Pigeon, PFI and Shenington.
