Winning in the wet

8th May 2013

Jonny proved that his ABkC “O” Plate title triumph was no fluke when he gave a repeat performance 7 days later. Competing in Round 2 of the Super 1 Series for Comers on 5th may, he took advantage of the wet track conditions and drove away from his opponents to win the first final very comfortably. Lewis Thompson followed him home in this one with Alex Quinn finishing 3rd.

Track conditions had dried a good bit for the second final, but they still suited Jonny’s driving style and he emerged as a strong favourite to win this one also. Unfortunately, his motor failed on the rolling lap and, despite repeated attempts, track marshals were unable to restart it. That allowed Oliver York to win closely pursued by Quinn and Tom Wood. Although the weekend finished on a disappointing note, jonny remained upbeat and accepted his misfortune with a shrug of the shoulders.

“Jonny’s carburettor flooded and there was nothing he could do about it,” said his dad Justin afterwards. “We’ve still had a very good weekend and Jonny proved that he could compete on equal terms with Britain’s top cadet drivers, most of whom are three or four years older. I was very proud of the way he reacted to the disappointment of not starting in Final 2. He only had his ninth birthday a couple of months ago, but he’s been very adult about it all.”

Jonny doesn’t have long to wait before facing his next big challenge as he’ll be competing in Round 2 of the Little Green Man Championships which take place at Rowrah this Sunday. More than 50 of Britain’s top cadet stars will be competing in this high profile event. It is followed, a week later, by Round 1 of the official British Championships. After his recent strong performances, Jonny will definitely be amongst the hot favourites to win.
