Phlegmatic at Fletcher's

6th February 2013

PF Winter Series (3/2/2013)

Jonny kicked off the 2013 season with a typically solid performance at Paul Fletcher’s circuit on Sunday. It was his first race out on the new IAME motor and, after returning some sensational times during early season testing, expectations were running high. However, carburettor problems hampered his performance during Saturday’s practice sessions.

A record breaking 67 drivers turned out in the IAME class. When added to the 36 Honda entries, this made an astonishing total of 103 cadets. Despite suffering from a sudden deterioration in power during his opening heat, Jonny still finished this race in 5th position. His hopes received a setback next time out when a kart spun in front of him. The inevitable collision dropped Jonny down to last place, but he fought back well to finish 15th. It was good enough to earn him a place in the “A” Final, albeit setting off from grid 20. He had to work extremely hard in the final but gradually picked up places on just about every lap. Eventually, he came home in 10th place but by this time the leading pack had moved well out of reach.

“Finishing 10th out of 67 was a good result for him and, with all of the top runners out in force, we certainly shouldn’t be disappointed with this start to the season,” said Justin. “With a little bit of luck I think he could have been a good few places higher up the finishing order, so things are looking promising for the important championship rounds ahead.”

The first big meeting in Jonny’s busy calendar will take place at Larkhall on April 21st, when the Little Green Man Championships get underway. With around 70 competitors taking part in this one, his temperament will certainly be tested. Before then, though, he’ll be taking part in several club meetings that should keep his racing skills well honed.
