Jonny's Cups Runneth Over

11th December 2012

Jonny picked up a cuddy-load of trophies at Cumbria KRC’s annual awards presentation on Saturday evening, December 8th. Apart from winning the cadet cup he also claimed the overall club championship trophy, adding these to the Kart Schools Shield. At just 8 years of age he is the youngest champion in Rowrah’s 50 year history.

He celebrated his success the following day by taking the “O” Plate title with a controlled display of driving in variable conditions. Fastest in the Timed Practice session by over half a second, he cruised to victory in Heat 1.

He set off from the back next time out and immediately got into trouble with a spin at Turn 1. That placed him some distance behind the leaders, but he fought back well to earn another important win.

So far the racing had taken place on a wet circuit, but the Final was run in dry conditions. However, he soon pulled well clear of the chasing pack and finished with around 60 yards to spare over Jack Brailsford and Matthew Easton.

A week earlier Jonny had competed very strongly to finish 4th at PF in amongst a high class field. The race was won by Matthew Graham who finished ahead of Sean Butcher. Jonny had held 3rd spot and looked about to take over 2nd before getting pushed out of position.

This race meeting followed on from another good result for Jonny when he finished 7th at Whilton Mill. Despite getting caught up in the pack, he showed lots of determination and fought back well.

“His overall speed probably isn’t much quicker than it was 6 months earlier,” said his dad, Justin. “However, his race-craft has improved a lot and he is now learning to cope in tight situations.”
