Jonny was in superb form on his home circuit, performing flawlessly in all three heats and Final. Using a motor that had just been rebuilt by John Davies on Friday, he set some very quick times throughout Saturday’s practice sessions, even managing to outpace the current S1 championship leader Cameron Roberts in each one.

Roberts returned home on Saturday evening and so wasn’t able to contest Sunday’s racing. Another competitor, Sam Kirkpatrick, sustained a broken collar-bone and so he obviously took no further part. That still left a very strong field and Jonny knew he’d have to be on top form.

His day got off to a good start when he won Heat 1 convincingly coming off grid 8. This race was concluded prematurely after 5 laps when an incident involving Matthew Easton and Sam Rogerson resulted in it being red flagged. Jonny had a more difficult task next time out starting from 12th position. He’d reached 2nd spot by half distance but by then the leader, Cory-Jay Coupe, was out of sight. By the end of eight laps, though, he’d reduced the gap down to around 15 yards. After a very comfortable victory over Matthew Easton in Heat 3 he claimed pole position for the Final. He immediately established a convincing and expanded it on every lap thereafter. His eventual winning margin over Easton amounted to 11.5 seconds, or around 250 yards.

“This race provided a good confidence booster ahead of the S1 Round here next weekend,” declared Justin. “Jonny’s fastest lap times were only around three tenths quicker than those of his rivals, but he was able to produce them consistently and that accounted for his winning margin. Hopefully, he’ll be able to reproduce that sort of form in Super One.”
