Canny at Glan 'Y
(S1 CHAMPIONSHIPS R4 AT GLAN ‘Y GORS 28 & 29th July 2012)
1st August 2012
Jonny showed lots of maturity and drove very skilfully on the tortuous Glan ‘Y Gors circuit without a great deal to show for his efforts. He was very quick straight from the start of Friday practice and maintained this speed all weekend in both wet and dry conditions.
On a dry circuit, he set the 3rd fastest lap-time in his group during Timed Qualifying. This gave him =6th position overall, on a par with the championship frontrunners Enaam Ahmed and Dean MacDonald. It was a fantastic achievement for someone so young and meant that he could start the Heats with plenty of confidence.
Heat 1 started badly for him when he took a knock and dropped down to 13th place. However, he refused to panic and gradually climbed back up the running order. With less than three laps remaining he had worked his way to 6th spot, but then was knocked onto the grass in an incident which also affected the race favourite, Cameron Roberts. It cost Jonny 12 seconds and at least ten places.
Heat 2 was run on a very damp circuit and caught everyone out as they were all using slick tyres. Almost immediately Jonny went up into 2nd place and the leading bunch of four drivers pulled well clear of everyone else. However, he made a slight error at one particular corner and found himself on a greasy patch. This caused him to spin onto the grass. He eventually finished this race in 21st place.
After winning the Reperchage , Jonny started Final 1 from the back. He did exceptionally well to finish 15th in this event, gaining 13 places and actually matching the winner’s time. Once again’ he’d driven with great maturity and conviction. Things were looking good for the next Final but his hopes were dashed even before a lap had been completed when he was struck from behind. Restarting his kart half a lap behind the leaders, he managed to catch and overtake a couple of drivers to eventually finish 27th.
“The results weren’t brilliant, but at this stage in Jonny’s karting career they’re not important,” said his dad Justin. “He’s the youngest driver in these championships and many of the top runners are five years older than him, so it’s always going to be tough. He only made one error all weekend and that occurred when he was challenging for the lead. The main thing is that he’s learning and still retaining his enthusiasm for the sport. Even though things didn’t quite go his way, Jonny enjoyed the weekend a lot and has proved that he’s quick enough to stay with the leaders, so I’m well pleased.”
