Rapid at Rowrah

11th March 2012

“I predicted this morning that Jonny Edgar would be surprising a few people today and he’s certainly done that.” That’s how Rowrah’s Clerk of the Course Iain Blair summed up a stunning performance that rewarded Jonny with 3rd place overall on his home circuit.

Still on novice plates he had to come through from the back in each of his three Heats, taking a few knocks along the way. Remarkably, he managed to notch up 2nd, 7th and 8th places that put him on grid 6 for the final.

Going into the first bend in this race, he took a heavy hit from behind and did well to keep control. However it cost him a couple of spots and valuable yardage on the three front runners. He fought back with determination and by lap 3 had moved up into 4th place.

By that time Ross Martin, Jack Brailsford and Scott Snell were more than 70 yards ahead and he faced a mammoth task in recovering lost ground. Gradually, though, he began to close in on the 3rd placed runner Snell. With two laps remaining he moved up onto Scott’s rear bumper and captured 3rd place going into Stewart’s Sweep.

Scott fought back immediately but Jonny held his nerve on the final lap to claim 3rd spot with 5 or 6 yards to spare. Ross Martin set the fastest lap of this race but Jonny was next up, just a tenth slower.

“Scott was very quick all last year in the Little Green Man Championships and has been going well in Comers up to now so I was delighted when Jonny passed him,” said Justin. “I’m also pretty chuffed that his time was so close to the winner’s because I’m sure Ross will start as one of the favourites in this year’s British Championships. The thing that really pleased me, though, was how well Jonny came through the field because a lot of his overtaking moves were pretty special.”

Jonny wasn’t quite so impressed. “The race was alright but I should have finished 2nd. I can’t wait for Glan Y Gors next week because after then I’ll be on yellow plates,” was his comment afterwards.
