Slick in the sleet

8th March 2012

PFI 4th MARCH

Jonny encountered almost Arctic conditions at the PFI circuit in Lincolnshire. Rain persisted for most of the day apart from those occasions when temperatures dropped sufficiently to allow for snow or sleet. “It was pretty depressing, especially when we heard that the sun had been shining back home in Cumbria,” admitted Justin. “Jonny had been very quick during Saturday practice held in dry conditions. At one point he actually posted the fastest time of all the 30 odd runners. It boosted his confidence but, knowing the forecast for Sunday, I expected him to struggle.”

He got knocked about quite a bit in the two Heats but coped well with adverse conditions in the final, eventually taking 17th place comfortably ahead of all the other novices. “Once I’d got in front of the other drivers on black plates I made sure not to spin off,” he said afterwards.

“Jonny did very well driving in conditions that he’s not yet familiar with,” said Justin. “I think he learned quite a lot about the moves you can get away with and those that generally go against you. He is still very small and this makes it difficult to set the kart up for near freezing conditions so we were very happy to come away with a decent result.”

Jonny’s 4th race meeting will be on his home circuit at Rowrah on March 11th. The following week he’ll travel down to Glan Y Gors for his final outing as a novice.
